BJD photo challenges

Group Info

Resin Aperture is a community devoted to creating and hosting monthly challenges using Ball-Joint Doll photography as a medium. The purpose of this is to keep inspiration and innovation within the community on Deviant Art alive and kicking, to inspire BJD Photographers who are less experienced to hone their craft, and to help photographers who are more experienced explore new topics and techniques.

These challenges and this group are a joint venture between *blindflower and *Dieux-Faux who will be maintaining Resin Aperture and the monthly challenges associated with this group.

The Mission Statement

WHAT IS RESIN APERTURE?

Resin Aperture is a community devoted to creating and hosting monthly challenges using Ball-Joint Doll photography as a medium and focuses very much on the photography aspect of the BJD hobby.
Our goal is to keep inspiration and innovation within the community on Deviant Art alive and kicking, to inspire BJD Photographers who are less experienced to hone their craft, and to help photographers who are more experienced explore new topics and techniques.

We hope you all enjoy the challenges and of course feel free to make suggestions if there's a particular subject you'd like to see covered!

. January + February Features .

... Oh snap, hi guys, remember us?

If it wasn't already obvious--we're more than a little behind on everything. Work and school devouring our souls and all that, I'm sure we all get the idea. So we have to apologize for being so late with two months worth of features and no challenge again for this month of March. 8( Admittedly the ideas have been on a complete standstill. So hey! If any of you have any ideas for a new challenge for upcoming months, we'd love to hear it!

I am in particular totally useless. /drool With that we would of course like to announce that we'll be going on yet another hiatus but with no set time. We'll be back when we get back. Yup--

All right so, moving onto the features. /o/ Everyone who submitted to the January and February challenges before the mentioned deadlines on the challenges themselves all got a chance to win a month's subscription~ We'll be distributing those out soon, but for now, the people that we believed hit the mark on the themes for these past months~ o/

Joining and Submission Guidelines

Resin Aperture is a group aimed at helping BJD photographers hone their craft, develop their skills and we hope inject some inspiration via monthly challenges.

What Resin-Aperture isn't
There are many fantastic groups dedicated to sharing BJD photos be it of BJD's in general or specific companies, genders or sculpts, Resin-Aperture is not one of them, rather we have a more specific focus in that we set monthly challenges for our members so all photos submitted should be intended for the specific challenge they're being submitted too.

We're seeing a lot of people trying to post multiple unrelated photos in our folders, repeatedly doing so will lead to removal from the group. We realise the rules are rather lengthy but please ensure you've read them before submitting your photos, if you're unsure please don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have.

How to Join
To join simply hit the "Join our group" button on the bar below the group name. While it's not a must to fill in a comment we would love to know why you'd like to join or what you hope to get out of the group.

:bulletyellow: Do I need to own a doll to join?
If you wish to submit work to the group then yes, or at least have access to one even if you don't necessarily own one yourself. You're more than welcome to join the group if you don't have one as of yet but plan too, but please remember the focus of the group is BJD photography.

:bulletyellow: Do I have to participate in every challenge?
While we encourage our members to take part in the group and challenges as often as they can we don't expect everyone to participate each and every month as we know that other things can and do take priority at times.

Group Submission Guidelines
There aren't too many nitpicky rules about submissions, but there are a few requests.

:bulletyellow: Each challenge will have a deadline. The folder however will remain open indefinitely and members will be free to continue submitting to it after that month has ended. The cut off is for inclusion to be considered for the subscriptions we'll be awarding each month for what we consider to be the most creative use of each challenge's theme.

:bulletyellow: Please make sure the images you upload are your personal best. I'm sure this goes without saying, but the challenges are only going to be as useful as the effort you are willing to put into the result. So have fun and work hard.

:bulletyellow: Please make sure all images are taken specifically for the challenge you're submitting it to, as it defeats the object of working through them if you simply submit old work.

:bulletyellow: Some images may have specific guideline submissions in the challenge description, but if not, please make sure your images are an appropriate size for critique, approximately 400x600 is a good size, but not required. Just make sure it isn’t something like 200x150. The smaller the image, the more detail will be lost.

:bulletyellow: Watermarks are alright, but please don’t let them overpower the image.

:bulletyellow: Please be aware that there are criteria for what kind of BJDs are featured here which follow the same guidelines as the Den of Angels forums as seen here. If you are unsure, feel free to contact the staff.

:bulletyellow: All rules are subject to change and editing by the group moderators, so please check back if you have any questions.

When your challenge image is perfected and uploaded to your account, you may then submit the image to the appropriate folder in the Resin Aperture group.

You can do this by navigating on the left of the homepage to the appropriate folder. For example, if you were submitting for the January Challenge, you would click on the January Challenge folder. To the right on the top, you will spy a “+Submit to This Folder” button. Click on this and navigate to your deviation, select it and “Okay” and your work is done! All you need to do is wait for a lovely mod to approve your piece and it will then appear in the groups’ challenge folder, ready to be seen by everyone in the group!

Please make sure, if you have a paid account, to enable critique on your work. If your account is not paid, make sure not to disable comments. Feedback is just as important as exercises. The purpose of this group is to support each other. So while you are submitting your own challenge piece, take a moment to critique a fellow artists work if there’s something you see that can be improved upon, or a tip you can impart. Sometimes Critiquing can be a little daunting, but when done well, it’s just as invaluable a resource as a challenge or tutorial. Critiquing should be done fairly and with professionalism. No one person does everything wrong in a picture, just like it’s rare someone does everything right. Make sure not to come across as just picking out flaws in your fellow group members’ works, but encourage them heartily as well in what they’ve done right. Some people might not even recognize their strengths until pointed out, so make sure critiques are well rounded.

For more information on a good critique, please visit this link; [link]

Resources
With each new challenge we will try to provide as many resources as we can be it tutorials or various other links that will remain up even after the challenge period has closed for future reference.
We more than welcome resource submissions from members, even if they're not related to the current challenge so please feel free to submit something if you think it will be helpful or of interest to your fellow members.

If you have any questions please feel free to comment or contact either *blindflower or =Dieux-Faux.
